Help, Help, I'm Being Repressed!

The persecution complex goes back to the roots of Christianity. It’s one of the few ideas an early follower would recognize from today’s Christianity. If memes are like genes, then the idea that Christianity is so dangerous to the status quo and must be stamped out is like the genome of a shark or a crocodile. It plays its role so well in its own proliferation that very little adaptation has been required regardless of changes to its environment. As far as the New Testament goes, it starts in what biblical scholars consider to be the earliest of the four Gospels:

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Koch’d up Wisconsin think tank attempts to rewrite history in real time

Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the day the Wisconsin Senate Republicans killed, for the time being, the collective bargaining rights of most public union employees in the state. I was there. I even slept in the Capitol overnight. It was chaotic, immoral, and illegal, too. The 19 Republicans removed the collective bargaining bit from Governer [sic] Scott Walker’s budget “repair” bill, and rushed it through without fair notice, in violation of the open meetings law. It was separated from the bill because budgetary measures require a 20-senator quorum to pass — which is why the then 14 Democratic Senators in exile were able to hold up its passage. Non-budget bills only need a 14-senator quorum. So there’s your Badger history/civics lesson.

Or Gloria Allred is a fascist moron

Just when you think the “professional left” got a hold of something they couldn’t possibly fuck up — that is, Rush Limbaugh doing, saying, imparting, intimating anything whatsoever — they do. Hard.

While this is not the case, overall, notorious “feminist” lawyer Gloria Allred has decided to do something incredibly stupid. She’s trying to get Rush Limbaugh prosecuted under an arcane Florida statute for calling Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute.”

TWiC #10: Free Will and Other Fairy Tales

[I should probably point out that I started writing this post before I heard that Sam Harris just released a short book / long pamphlet about this subject. You'll just have to take my word for it.]

Being a connoisseur of crazy ideas carries with it a sort of demarcation problem. Is there a clearly defined line between a belief being totally unreasonable and kooky, and a belief which is just simply wrong? What kind of method can we use to tell the difference?

Sometimes it can be tough to distinguish between one unjustified belief categorized as crackpottery while another equally unjustified belief escapes unscathed simply because it’s popular. As it goes with pornography and Supreme Court justices, we might not be able to clearly define woo, but we can know it when we see it. As hazily defined a term as it is, maybe it would help the cause to expand its definition to the point where it makes more people re-examine their positions.

New Orleans Saints plan football version of Death Race 2000

Hey, did you know that football players get paid large sums of money to beat the shit out of each other? I know! I was shocked, too! Oh, and get this, apparently hockey players get paid to fire a cylindrical bit of rubber at a net! Barbaric, right?

Review of Bruce Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball

In Bruce Springsteen’s late period, there’s been one constant: the shittier America, the better his music. In 2002, when the country was still reeling from 9/11, he gave us The Rising, the one musical statement about the attacks that didn’t feel like a massive pile of jingoistic garbage. Then, in 2007, when Bush was just about done destroying the universe, he released the excellent Magic, which made the already painfully obvious point that Dubya was an awful president somehow seem interesting and relevant. By contrast, in early 2009, when America was willing to overlook its many problems because “OMG Obama! YAY!” he released the decent, but rather lightweight Working On A Dream. Quite simply, the man thrives on pointing out America’s flaws.

6 People/Groups Obama Didn’t Call

Mar

As you’re no doubt aware, President Obama (known throughout my studio apartment as the Drone King for his excellent ability to kill people overseas while still maintaining massive support among liberals who use to hate that sort of thing when a Republican did it) picked up the phone to chat with a woman by the name of Sandra Fluke.

Ms. Fluke, a Georgetown University law student, was called a “slut” and “prostitute” by fat fuck-face Rush “Why Has He Not Joined Andrew Breibart Yet?” Limbaugh. Mr. Limbaugh, a right-wing blowhard radio host, who has since offered an “apology,” took to bashing Ms. Fluke because she went on the TeeVee and defended employer-provided insurance that covers birth control.

Yes, readers of the future, birth control is what people fought over in America in the beginning of the 21st Century. If you feel like looking down on we, your ancestors, you have every right. Have at it. We have earned your righteous contempt many times over.

“I just read something that called me the Drone King.

Meanwhile, for those of us still here in the present I thought I’d whip up a nice little list of people and or groups that President Barack Obama DIDN’T call.

Obama didn’t call…

… the people of New Orleans to apologize for the Army Corps of Engineers drowning them.

… workers in Wisconsin to support their battle for collective bargaining.

… his supporters to explain his craven drug policy concerning pot.

… Iran so he could “talk to our enemies.”

… on cops to stop cracking down on Occupy protesters.

… environmentalist to let them know they could go fuck themselves.

Maybe he’ll phone when Limbaugh calls them sluts. Probably not.
